  17. <p>     U.S. government sources say Polish President LECH WALESA
  18. may have been forced to dismiss a trusted aide because of
  19. accusations that he was a KGB spy. Jacek Merkel, who quietly
  20. resigned in March as Minister of State in charge of defense and
  21. security, had worked closely with Walesa as a shipyard engineer
  22. and Solidarity leader. Merkel privately maintains that political
  23. enemies fabricated evidence against him, and is fighting to
  24. clear his name. The Interior Ministry has refused to release its
  25. police collaborator lists, compiled in the communist era,
  26. because the files may contain disinformation about people who
  27. had no relationship with the KGB.
